When Sydney, my 16-year-old daughter, wanted to rebuild a classic vehicle before getting her driver’s license, we considered various options. However, I suggested a Mustang, Sydney, like her dad, preferred trucks. I recalled a 1961 Ford Unibody I had heard about years earlier and acquired it as a project vehicle. This rare truck, known for its one-piece bed and cab, had been stored in my garage and was now the perfect father-daughter project.
Upon inspection, we found it was already fitted with a custom Heidts chassis, Wilwood brakes, and rack and pinion steering, albeit with some surface rust. We cleaned and powder-coated the chassis and installed a 6.2-liter V-8 engine from a 2011 Ford Raptor, along with a Tremec TKX five-speed transmission, per Sydney's preference for a manual.
As Sydney dives deeper into the project, she’s excited about installing a new fuel tank, Dakota gauges, and more. She plans to keep the truck’s original primer coat for now while saving up for future updates. Sydney is eager to get the truck road-ready and may even challenge me in my ’57 Ford pickup at Rocky Mountain Race Week.
Stay tuned for updates on our progress!
